Wizkid, Darey, Duncan Mighty top NEA list

Teen pop sensation, Wizkid, will be the nominee to beat at this year’s Nigeria Entertainment Awards, NEA, holding Sunday, September 4 at the Sharp Theatre, New York. In the nominations list released early yesterday, Wizkid bagged three nominations in the hottest single of the year, best new act and best pop/R&B artist of year categories. Opposition is very stiff in all the categories. In the former, which aims to honour the best and newest talent in the game in the year under review, Wizkid is up against Ice Prince, Tiwa Savage, Mo’Cheddah, Waje and surprisingly, Dr. Sid. In the latter, he has D’banj, Darey, Banky W (incidentally, his mentor and label boss), Waje and Tuface Idibia to contend with.

Like D’banj who is nominated for best music video for Mr. Endowed remix featuring Snoop Dogg and hottest single, Darey also has three nominations (best album and music video of the year). His hope of clinching any of the awards is however under serious threat because Asa’s Beautiful Imperfection; Sound Sultan’s Back from the future; Naeto C’s Super C Season; MI’s MI2 and Duncan Mighty’s Legacy are the other contenders in the best album category. Duncan Mighty has further nominations in Indigenous artiste of the year and hottest single for the song, Obianuju.

The Pan African Artiste of the year category features some of the biggest names in African music today; Fally Ipupa, R2Bees, Awilo, VIP, Winky D and Juliana Kanyomozi. Other multiple nominees are Don Jazzy (music producer and entertainment executive of the year); Asa (best international artist and best album) Naeto C (best rap act and best album) and Waje (best pop/R&B and best new act) among others.

Now in its sixth year, the NEA, an annual event recognizing the many contributions of Nigerian entertainers to a thriving industry across the globe, continues to assume covetous status back home. Past winners of the award include D’banj, Omawumi and Tuface. According to the organisers, “We are dedicated to promoting the image and rich culture of Nigeria in the continent and to the international scene. This dedication has increased the awareness of this new edgy style of African entertainment and has helped promote Nigerian acts to the world.”
