Fikirte Addis of Ethiopia to Showcase at Africa Fashion Week in New York

Regardless of the seemingly never-ending conflict, crisis and confusion that grasp the nations of Africa, there are always inspirational individuals that demonstrate exceeding potential and unity, washing away stigma and bringing forth a fresh burst of inspiration.

Fikirte Addis of Ethiopia won the Origin Africa Fiber to Fashion 2011 in Mauritius after competing with twelve other designers from all over the continent. Her designs made solely from handmade Ethiopian traditional fabrics triumphed. With this accomplishment, USAID sponsored her in the opportunity to showcase her work at Africa Fashion Week New York 2011 taking place on July 14, 15, and 16 at the Broad Street Ballroom 41 Broad St. New York NY 10004.

“It was a tough and exciting competition. Each country brought its own attractive tradition and style. Even I couldn’t choose because all of it was beautiful. It was an amazing experience and I learned a lot” said the designer.

Ethiopia is struggling with the most basic of necessities—water. Political tensions are high. However, time was taken to create an event that caters to creativity, progression, and fashion.

“Fikirte did not only win a chance to showcase at Africa Fashion Week in New York. She is *winning* and representing for women in Ethiopia and all of Africa. She is an example of how creativity allows African women to showcase economic empowerment which is the reason for the gathering of the African Federation of Women Entrepreneurs and the Ethiopian Women Entrepreneurs Association during the official opening of the second Global Women Entrepreneurs Trade Fair and Investment forum in Addis Ababa, October of 1998.

Fikirte is a light that will allow others to shine as well and we welcome her,” said Adiat Disu the Director of Africa Fashion Week in New York.
