President Goodluck Jonathan seeks God's face

President Goodluck Jonathan made an unexpected appearance at the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s (RCCG) Holy Ghost Congress on the fifth night of the six-day programme. The vast crowd roared when they saw the president walk onto the stage. The jubilation at his presence was rivalled only by the noise that went up when the General Overseer of RCCG, Enoch Adeboye stepped on the altar later on.

Mr Jonathan sat next to Mr Adeboye and his wife, Folu for the duration of the service.

Shortly after his entrance, Mrs. Adeboye led the crowd in prayers for the nation, which included beseeching the almighty to raise up for Nigeria a leader who fears God rather than man. In his speech following the prayers, Mr Jonathan echoed this request, stating that he desires the continuous prayers of the people that he might not deviate from the Lord’s ways. This statement, like many others in the president’s speech, brought cheers from the crowd.

The president emphasised that he was unable to accomplish anything without the help of the Lord. He compared himself to David, the Biblical shepherd turned king, saying that he had never dreamt of reaching his current position.

President Jonathan also used the opportunity to outline what his government is trying to do. He stated that they were tackling the issue of kidnapping, saying that they were doing all they could to put an end to it by the middle of next year. He explained that he considers safety a priority because nobody wants to do business in a country where the safety of life and property is not guaranteed. Furthermore, he mentioned that his government wants to address the quality of education and health care among other issues. He reiterated that none of these plans would be realised without the Lord’s help.
